Text Wrapping Around Table in Word

I knew that you could do text wrapping around Figures and Pictures in Word when you added them, however, I did not know it was also possible to have this done on Table. To UNDO or add that, right click on the table and go to [Properies] or click on [Properties] in the [Table Tools]> Layout> Table section of the riboon. Right in the first option you will see "Text wrapping" under "alignment.

Powerpoint 2016 Flashes Table Before It Appears

This is not a post with a solution, just noting I'm not the only one seeing it: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/table-flashes-in-powerpoint-2016-presentation/214e3675-eacb-4a5d-89e1-2c001f53dbc4

Display or Hide Zero Values in Excel

Annoying issue where when I changed the formatting to Scientific, all the blank cells became 00E00. I didn't want that crowding my spreadsheet.

Solution:
  • File > Options > Advanced
  • Under Display options for this worksheet, select a worksheet, and then do one of the following:
    • To display zero (0) values in cells, check the Show a zero in cells that have zero value check box.
    • To display zero (0) values as blank cells, uncheck the Show a zero in cells that have zero value check box.

Individually Animate Smart Art Graphics

So it turns out there is actually an option to individually animate Smart Art, I hate using it, but a deck I was editing had it, you can actually select [Effect Options], it looks like a color wheel, and select "Animate One By One"

Animation Numbers Do Not Appear in Powerpoint

So this was incredibly frustrating, I was editing a huge presentation and the animation numbers were not appearing in the slide. It turns out this is a weird known bug. But basically, if you download a powerpoint straight from the web and open it, sometimes it will not load the numbers. You need to close it an manually open it from explorer

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Searching for Styles in Word

I was editing format for a proposal and apparently the editor is extremely specific about certain styles. In a huge 100+ page document, I needed to check how many times that style appears. It turns out you can do:
  1. ctrl+f, click the down arrow and choose [Advanced Find]
  2. Make sure the "Find what:" box is empty
  3. Click "More >>"
  4. The [No Formatting] button should already be Greyed out, if it is not, click it
  5. Click on the Format Button, select the style and click okay, you will see it added that under the "Find what:" dialogue

Stop word from updating references when you save as pdf or print

I really mainly have problems when my inserted references look like this: [4]-[6] and I want them to look like this [4-6]. If you edit them, normally in word when you click save as PDF it changes everything back to the first format. To avoid this you can "lock the fields" and just press ctrl+f11 to lock it, and ctrl+shift+f11 to unlock it. I haven't found a way to determine in properties if something is locked or not, but if after you finish your dock, you click ctrl+a then ctrl+f11, you lock everything nicely.

"File>Options>Display and uncheck the "Update fields before printing" may do it.  Or, it may be necessary to use Ctrl+A (to select everything) and then Ctrl+F11  to Lock the fields, or Ctrl+Shift+F9 to Unlink them."

Fixing Comment Box Proofing in word files in a document originally created in another language

Ran into a problem today. The collaborators for the project we are working on are foreign so the document they sent me is defaulted to their native language. The challenge is you can simply change the proofing language Review > Language > Set Proofing Language ...  however I noticed when I added comments they still retained the original language. The quick fix for this is:

  1. Show the "Styles" by clicking the Expand Box in the Styles section of the [Home] Tag ribbon
  2. Click [Options]
  3. Change "Selected Styles to Show:" to all styles
  4. In the style window right click on the Comments Text > Modify
  5. [Format] > Language > Select English!

Game Bar Prevents Steam Overlay

When you first plug in an Xbox controller, you will see a pop-up for the game bar if you click the Xbox button. To turn off this feature so you can use the steam overlay in big picture mode do the following:

In Steam, press Win+G or Xbox button to open Game bar (choose "Yes, this is a game.")
Open the settings (cog icon) on Game bar and uncheck "Open Game bar using [Xbox logo] on a controller"
Uncheck "Remember this as a game" and Game bar should close
Now Game bar won't open when pressing the Xbox button anymore (seems to be global) and the Xbox button works as expected again in Big Picture mode. To open Game bar later, press Win+G.

When saving a word document all comments become by "Author"

As stated in the subject, it is hugely annoying when you are trying to review papers from multiple people that have been passing along a draft if this happens. You need to :

In Word 2010, go to File->Options->Trust Center->Trust Center Settings. Then, uncheck "Remove personal information from the file properties on save"
In Word 2013, it falls under File -> Options -> Trust Center -> Trust Center Settings... -> Privacy Options. It is found under the Document-specific settings section.

Different Colors for Labels on Axis in Graph/Chart for Excel

I needed to come up with a way to have the labels different colors to add additional categorization my charts. I had seen a co-worker do this before, but he make several copies of the same graph with different colors and then just used paint to edit them. Turns out there is a much simpler answer here:
Link

Short Ver.
  • Create a separate column for each colored label, and have the output be Zero or #N/A
  • Change the plot of these to "Line Chart"
  • Click on the label and select "Category Name" uncheck the rest
  • Under the labels set the alignment label position to "below"
  • Click on the actual lines and hide them
  • Change the color of the labels
Okay, lets say you copied the chart and the labels disappeared.
  •  Add the legend back if you removed it
  • Click on the legend marker for labels "it should still be there even if there is nothing" change the color so it appear son the graph
  • Right click on the line, and click "Add Data Labels"
  • Now you can edit it just like above, just make sure to make the line no color again afterwards

You need to
  1. Close out all instances of Word
  2. Re-open the file
  3. Move Word to a different window
  4. Click on Cross References again

Word Figures and Tables Missing from Table of Contents, Figure and Table Numbers Skipped

Ran into a weird issue when working on a paper. For some reason the paper would skip Fig 2. I had recently made some edits and couldn't figure out why it just jumped from Fig 1. to Fig 3.

It turns out that Track Changes (Obviously turned on for my co-authors) completely messes with the labeling.

Source

Post Below:

Well, I was finally able to answer my own question. the answer might be helpful to others. It turns out that change tracking was wreaking havoc with figure and table numbers in the cross reference lists. I finally went through and selectively accepted changes to all the figure and table titles and the missing figures reappeared in the list.

The problem is that when they go away in the list, they also disappear in the document because the reference IDs become stale, I suppose. So now I get to go through and find all the places I inserted one of the references that disappeared and reinsert it. Thank you Microsoft...

Windows 10 Phone Bluetooth Setting remains grayed out and unselectable after turning it off

I had an issue where I turned the "Status" of my windows phone bluetooth to Off and it would never let me turn it back on. The solution is to drag down from the top of the screen to see the mini tile menu, you can restart the bluetooth from there

Windows 10 Phone Upgrade Google Calendar Events Set One Hour Later

I had an issue where after my Windows 10 Phone upgraded all my Google calendar events were appearing later than expected. It turns out this was not due to any of the following reasons:
  • Time Zones on either my Outlook Mail or Gmail as some posts suggested
  • Daylight Savings Time Configuration
  • Set Date and Time Automatically
I read a posts that this may only be an issue for recurring calendar events, but basically Windows 10 actually MOVED my events on my GOOGLE CALENDAR up one hour AND automatically sent out updates to guests. So that is insanely poor design, gmail makes sure to ask me if I want to edit any recurring events in the series, Apparently Windows just did whatever the hell it wanted. Unfortunately, the moved events will NOT appear in the trash, I had to manually drag the calendar entries on my Google Calendar back to where they should have been. I only figured this out because my gmail was cluttered with "updated events" Microsoft really screwed up on this on.

Turn off gray brackets in header in Word 2016

So I had to temporarily change my app local to Japan to run a Japanese game. Anyway when I went into word I had these strange gray brackets appearing in the header section. As described here it turns out they are "Crop Marks" or "Text Boundaries" the guy in that forum had the same issue. Anyway the solution is found here

Basically:

File > Options > Advanced > Scroll down to "Show Document Content" > Uncheck the Text Boundaries and Crop Marks
